Home Entertainment Room

Sungai Petani, Kedah August 2024

Project Overview

Project Overview

A homeowner in Sungai Petani, Kedah commissioned a dedicated home entertainment room capable of handling high-volume movie playback, music listening, and karaoke sessions without disturbing other areas of the residence or neighbouring properties. The room was located on an upper floor of the house, which introduced additional challenges related to sound transmission through the floor-ceiling assembly to rooms below and through shared walls to adjacent bedrooms and living spaces.

Acoustic Challenges

Residential entertainment rooms present a distinct set of acoustic problems. Unlike commercial venues where operating hours are limited, a home entertainment room may be used at any time, including late evenings when ambient noise levels are lowest and sound leakage is most noticeable. The homeowner’s system included a multi-channel speaker arrangement with a powered subwoofer, generating significant low-frequency energy that standard residential construction cannot contain. Bass frequencies below 100 Hz pass through typical plasterboard walls and concrete slabs with little resistance, and structure-borne vibration from the subwoofer can propagate through rigid connections across multiple rooms.

Materials and Installation Approach

The treatment began with SG-DM103 Vibration Damping Mat applied across all wall and ceiling surfaces. This damping mat was bonded directly to the existing substrates to add mass and reduce resonance in the building structure before the acoustic framing system was installed.

SG-WD50 Wall Shock Dampers and SG-CD50 Ceiling Shock Dampers were mounted to the walls and ceiling respectively. Both damper models use a heavy-duty spiral spring paired with polymer damping rubber, achieving a natural frequency below 5 Hz and a load capacity of 50 kg per unit. The wall dampers (115 x 50 x 55 mm) and ceiling dampers (50 x 50 x 100 mm) were spaced according to the calculated load of the acoustic assembly, ensuring each unit operated within its rated capacity. These dampers fully decouple the new acoustic surfaces from the building structure, preventing bass energy and impact vibration from transferring into the house frame.

SG-E17 Composite Sound Insulation Boards were fixed to the decoupled metal stud framework on walls and ceiling. The SG-E17’s three-layer construction of Calcium Silicate and EPDM delivers a 33 dB sound reduction index. Pro370 Safe ‘n’ Silent provided additional resilient isolation within the assembly. All board joints were sealed to prevent flanking.

AcousPanel PET Fibre Acoustic Panels were installed on the interior surfaces as the finishing layer. These panels manage internal reverberation by absorbing mid-to-high-frequency reflections, improving audio clarity for both movie dialogue and music. Being formaldehyde-free and odourless, they are well suited to an enclosed residential environment.

Results

The completed entertainment room allowed the homeowner to operate the audio system at full volume, including deep bass from the subwoofer, without audible leakage to bedrooms, living areas, or neighbouring properties. The interior acoustic treatment delivered a controlled listening environment with reduced echo and improved dialogue clarity, enhancing the overall home cinema and music experience.
